SPHS Students Participate in Collective Bargaining Simulation Project

SPHS Students Participate in Collective Bargaining Simulation Project On May 18 and for the 15th consecutive year, Mr. Bruhnke's Honors Econ/AP Government class participated in a collective bargaining simulation in the SPHS library. Among the 10 coaches of the labor and management teams were 2 federal mediators and representatives from a half-dozen unions, including UTLA, SEIU, Teamsters, and SAG-AFTRA. The activity involved a simulated bargaining scenario for health care workers over issues such as pay, medical benefits, child care, and career advancement. The student-teams proceeded through multiple rounds of negotiations until settlements were reached, then wrote persuasive essays urging support for the tentative agreements. The coaches and curriculum are provided by the Collective Bargaining Education Project, which is sponsored by UTLA and the California Federation of Teachers.

Mentor Heroes!

Mentor Heroes! San Pedro HS celebrates the culmination of our 2018-19 Mentorship Program. 50 staff members (including teachers, administrators, coordinators, and counselors) volunteered to mentor approximately 100 students at both the Flagship and Olguin campuses. Students in the mentorship program were identified based on risk factors and paired with our SPHS staff mentors. Mentors & mentees have met individually and in small groups throughout the school year to build relationships, improve grades and attendance, to build networks of support, and to have a little fun at our Mixer events! These mixers were hosted by our mentorship program co-organizers, Ms. Erin Favre-Smith, A-G Counselor and Ms. Stacey Lamperelli, PSA Counselor. They provided our mentors and their mentees with an opportunity to come together for various activities and treats such as gratitude reflections at Thanksgiving and a holiday movie & hot chocolate bar before winter break. So proud to be a Pirate!!

Dynamic Mindfulness Experience

Dynamic Mindfulness Experience This week, some Pirates were able to experience Dynamic Mindfulness. Mindful action, breathing, and centering helps shift our response to stress: we move with full attention on the present experience while using the breath to calm our nervous system. Chronic stress places us in a persistent state of fight, flight, or freeze. Our ability to make decisions, pay attention, regulate emotions, adaptively cope, and experience empathy is disrupted. And, over time, our bodies and our mental health begin to feel the toll. This is research based tools that students, staff and families to add to their toolkit for self care. Students and staff can participate in morning Mindfulness Sessions at Flagship on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:40 AM in room A1 and at the Olguin Campus every Thursday at 7:40 in room E110.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month Since 1949, the month of May has been observed as Mental Health Month in the United States and many national organizations such as NAMI, Mental Health America, and other affiliates spotlight Mental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to stop the stigma associated with mental health disorders. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Month is Fitness #4Mind4Body, meaning that health is an all-encompassing matter and we must take care of our minds just as much as we take care of our bodies. During this month, SPHS hopes to provide helpful resources to encourage students, staff, and parents to support a loved one in need.
